Australia has one of the fastest growing sustainability industries, with relatively strong public support for sustainability policies and practices. This support finds its way into highly motivated sustainability consumers, particularly in the outdoor industry. It's no surprise then that Australia is literally busting at the seams with amazing sustainable companies. Here are just five of those that are really inspiring us and we hope you too!
Outland Denim
Primary Product Category: Ethical, sustainable denim
Sustainability Report: Link
Third-Party Certifications: B-Corp
No discussion of sustainable brands in Australia is complete without Outland Demin. While perhaps not exactly an outdoor apparel company, we have to include them because they are standout in sustainability. Outland Denim is one of the top scoring B-corps worldwide. In our database, they are ranked the third highest scoring B-corp just barely behind Patagonia and, the top scorer of them, all Dr. Bronner's (nice company). The company bakes in sustainability and impact into everything they do, from uber-responsible sourcing to use of sustainable materials and low-impact manufacturing. And, of course, they produce a world-class product. Outland Denim routinely delivers some of the most desirable jeans in the industry sported by some of the most well-known people on the planet.
Will+Bear
Primary Product Category: Sustainable hats
Sustainability Report: Link
Third-Party Certifications: B-Corp
Will+Bear has a cool name. They also have a cool ethos - "We exist to create a culture that cares for our planet." How about that for a goal!? Designed with circularity in mind, Will+Bear produces hats are hand crafted from natural fibers that won’t cost the earth. These include wool, hemp, cotton and straw. Fully transparent, Will+Bear includes this goal in their sustainability vision - "We are constantly searching for innovative or recycled materials that will reduce our reliance on new fibres & replace the small amount of PET we have in our range." Sustainability isn't about perfection, it's a long journey, and the key is transparency with consumers. Thank you Will+Bear for being an excellent example of this ongoing balance!
Underwear for Humanity
Primary Product Category: Underwear
Sustainability Report: Link
Third-Party Certifications: B-Corp
We love a great story, and Underwear for Humanity has one. Born from the vision of one woman whose life has included Indian ashrams, homelessness in Greece, to Goddess studies in Glastonbury and the runway in Paris. Kelly Barrett has taken lessons (some of the hard) from her own life to build an amazing business that puts people and planet first. In addition to a high-quality product, UH's impact includes free undies to people in need, Aboriginal rent payment and work training. They are "obsessed" with sustainable materials use, ethical production and recycling. And for a one-woman company, it's astounding the are able to produce a rather comprehensive impact report. Well done.
Zorali
Primary Product Category: Outdoor Apparel & Accessories
Sustainability Report: Link
Third-Party Certifications: B-Corp, Climate-Neutral Certified
With a clear sustainable mission, Zorali understands the balance between a growing and profitable business and their responsibility to protect the planet and people. Zorali makes a clear and measurable statement for ethical business practices, renewable materials, carbon neutrality and giving back (they are a 1% for the Planet member). We love their visual and clear reporting on top of their commitments to reforestation. While we haven't gotten our hands on their products yet, we are drooling over their camp fleece and amazing backpacks.
beachborne
Primary Product Category: Blankets & Towels
Sustainability Report: Link
beachborne makes recycled eco-luxe quick dry sand free towels with a purpose. The microfibre fabric they use in their recycled towels reduces dependence on petroleum as a source of raw materials and helps reduce waste. The company reports that each towel diverts up to 20 discarded plastic bottles from ending up in oceans and landfills. Though we'd like to see more details on their sustainability practices, we love their commitment to conscious manufacturing techniques, sustainable product materials, and minimal packaging waste.
